Silver Towers Complex Designated a Landmark
On Nov. 18, 2008, the 'University
Village' Site (commonly known as the Silver Towers
Complex) was awarded landmark status by the
Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The three buildings, designed by I.M. Pei, are
representations of their architectural era. The
decision made by the Landmarks Preservation
Commission ensures that these buildings will be
preserved and protected so that they can be
appreciated by future generations of NYC residents.
In NYU's long-range space planning effort, NYU's
consultants have recommended that the University
consider building a fourth tower on the Silver
Towers site. Although the University has not made a
decision about this concept, Alicia Hurley, NYU's
Vice President for Government Relations and
Community Engagement, said, "We are pleased
that today's action ensures that now, if we do
pursue that course, everyone can be assured of a
full public dialogue about the project."
Andrew Berman, Executive Director of
GVSHP also lauded the decision: "The LPC's
designation report, approved at today's meeting,
acknowledges the importance of the open space as
integral to the design, thus making their required
approval of construction of a tower on this site by
the LPC in the future seem highly unlikely."
